InterContinental Malta became the latest entrant into Malta’s five-star hotel sector on the 18th January 2003, two years after Ogilvy Malta were appointed by InterContinental Windsor to prepare the hotel’s international advertising campaign, outlet identities and opening collaterals.

Situated in the exclusive beachside resort of St Julian’s, InterContinental Malta is just seven kilometres from Valletta, Malta’s capital city, and within walking distance of some of the islands finest shopping and entertainment locations. On opening it featured a lagoon styled outdoor pool, a spectacular pontoon restaurant on the luxury hotel’s private sandy beach, six restaurants and six bars offering a
raft of dining and relaxation options.

As Malta’s largest hotel in the sector, the InterContinental Malta put a great deal of focus on conference and incentive tourism, an area in which General Manager Fethi Abdennadher told Ogilvy’s Creative Team that the hotel is not necessarily competing with other local hotels but with other Mediterranean destinations.

With 451 guestrooms, 18 conference rooms spread out over 2,700 square metres of floor space and 4,000 square metres of surrounding gardens, the InterContinental Malta, was the country’s largest five-star hotel. US design firm Di Leonardo, which had designed many other luxury hotels, were specifically chosen by the owning company for the InterContinental Malta project.
